ART: PAINTING
THE ART OF DANIEL ILIESCU                              By Solange Berthier, Salon de L'Art Moderne, Paris, France

The art of Daniel Iliescu could be ephemeral, however, it is a message difficult to intercept. And art does not have to be grandiose to convey a message. We, the French critics, do believe in "Simplicite fait beaute", meaning simplicity creates beauty. And there is beauty in the art of Mr Iliescu. Also, there is a message. Thus, his art should be seriously considered. Picasso had a message. He transmitted via various epochs, colors and styles. Dali was phenomenal in creating illusionary messages. Goya excelled in conveying the message of Spanish martyrs and depicting the atrocity of the French-Spanish war. Now, when free-spirited artists blend together a vision, a message and powerful unstructured compositions, the art comes to life in bursting beauty. Iliescu is relatively unknown to many of us. Nevertheless, he has the ingredients and what it takes to stand tall among leading contemporary artists. I am attracted to the eloquent simplicity in his artwork. Sometimes, this very simplicity appeared meaningless. Some other time, it bursts with intelligence and nonchalant  beauty. His art could be very powerful, despite the fragile strokes. However, that fragility is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it is pure human drama, for I can detect and feel waves of temerity and personal tumult in Iliescu's work. Consequently, his art becomes real, and penetrating. And nothing on the landscape of art is more evocative and captivating than esthetic truthfulness. But, here again, I fell prey to contradiction. How is it possible for an art to capture our interest, if it does not reflect

personal experiences and intimate emotions? The answer is simple. We admire the work of Rubens, yet, many of us disdain voluptuous forms. We praise the masterpieces of Raphael. Yet, perhaps, few of us experienced religious fervor. In art, we do not always seek self-identification. Art does not have to be a mirror of our understanding, concepts about life or personal taste. Art could simply be, the depiction of the true state of mind of an artist. Iliescu did that brilliantly. I have a lot of admiration for this young and most talented artist. He has the necessary message, the dynamism in eloquent simplicity, perhaps naive or candid illustrative emotions, and above all the strokes of an intelligent and reflective beauty. Daniel Iliescu is a world-class painter.
