INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING

112 REASONS WHY  SINCE 1944, THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND THE PENTAGON  SECRETLY HATED THE FRENCH.

France versus the United States

Why are relations so bad with France?  I think the overriding goal of French policy is to expand bureaucratic statism, both home and abroad.  From the forming of the EU (which is run by French bureaucrats) to the Kyoto Treaty, the French care not about maximizing social welfare, but creating more jobs for bureaucrats.  Any scientifically literate person who is not on-the-take knows that Global Warming is a complete scam, yet bureaucrats like Hans Blix claim that they are more afraid of Global Warming than the spread of WMDs in the Middle East.  I find it a telling fact that 60% of French legislators are former bureaucrats.  Not only would French interests lose sweet-heart oil deals if we liberated Iraq, but the oil-for-food program, which is mainly administered by French bureaucrats would end. How did this culture of bureaucratic statism develop and become entrenched  in France? How did the United States come to follow a different path?  Arthur Herman, historian, and coordinator of the Smithsonian’s Western Heritage Program, and author of How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything In It has a theory: ..the French Enlightenment tends to put its faith not in individuals or entrepreneurs but at those who hold power at the top whether they were a monarchical government, as someone like Voltaire did or a revolutionary as happens later as the French Enlightenment morphs into the French Revolution. And it’s two fundamental different points of view, two different views of the future that emerge out of the French Enlightenment, which is one in which a large centralized state is able to bring about and transform society by dictating by enlightened and legislation and guidance versus a Scottish Enlightenment view which says this is ultimately about advocates of individuals pursuing their own self interest and that those two distinct visions have shaped our future in the history of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century ways in a really extraordinary degree. And you could argue that the Cold War was in many ways a confrontation of the principles of the Scottish Enlightenment embedded in American values and in institutions of America and its allies versus the French Enlightenment with its inheritance uh, that it passed on to Karl Marx and to the utopian socialists in the Nineteenth Century and then on to the vision of the Soviet Union and that Communism brought as to what human improvement was about.

Simply, the United States is the embodiment of the Scottish Enlightenment and the French are the embodiment of the French Enlightenment.  The Soviet Union may have died, but the ideas that spawned the Soviet Union, mainly French bureaucratic statism, are alive and well in Paris. Now what does this have to do with death of socialism?  Well, I don't think socialism is dead, and in its pure sense, it is really not the enemy. (Now, granted there is a real-world correlation between the socialism and statism.)  The enemy (of those of us who subscribe to the ideals of the Sottish Enlightenment) is statism, and although the most extreme form of it, communism, has died, statism as an ideology is NOT dead

I think if the UK does fully integrate with the EU, it will have devastating effects on the UK.  The UK's institutions are based on the Scottish Enlightenment (very similar to the concept of the "Anglosphere"), and when the statist model is imposed on Britain, it will conflict with existing institutions, and the result will be a quagmire.  This is obvious to some in the UK, but unfortunately, not to Tony Blair.  My solution for the UK is to pull out of the EU, and join a free-trade agreement with the United States. The United States and France have different worldviews.  French statism may work in France, but it does not seem to help poor countries join the party.  The United States has decided that best way to secure peace is by force-feeding the Middle East with our market institutions based on individual liberty.  In my mind, that is what a neocon is -- one who wants to export these institutions of liberty to those who don't have them.  France deplores this because our institutions don't require many bureaucrats.  This Franco-American rift is here to stay.

Update: I forget to mention that former British colonies have done much better economically than have former French colonies. I think this has to do with decentralized institutions Britain imposed on its colonies. Many scholars primarily credit the colonies' adoption of British common law for this performance gap.
